19th April:
1) Tellebration - Story Telling
(6.15-8.15pm, Audi)
1. This event will be accepting two entries from each year-The entries can be either a single member or a two member team.
2. The hostel representatives are required to search for people who can narrate an interesting story in an impressive way in front of an audience. Help your participants to select an impressive (non-boring story) and tell it in an engrossing way.
3. The storytelling must not take more than 15 minutes per entry.
4. The storytelling (if needed) maybe accompanied by music/sound effects in the background.
5. Judgment parameters solely depend on how the story is narrated and the story selected.
• The story selected (how engrossing and mesmerising it can be).(English)
• The way the narration is done by the participants (how engrossing and mesmerising it is made).
6. The hostel representatives are required to submit the name of the stories to the conveners of RWS ASAP that the entries don’t clash.

Overview
1. Each debating match will consist of two teams; one to propose the motion and one to oppose it. The Team proposing may be known as “The Government”. The team opposing may be known as “The Opposition”. Teams will be designated as the Proposition or the Opposition for each round of the competition on a random basis

4. Points of Information(PoI):
i. Points of Information are questions directed to the member speaking by any member of the other team.
ii. A PoI cannot be offered in the first and the last half minute of speech.
iii. Mode of offering : A PoI must be indicated by a member of an opposing team rising from his/her seat, placing one hand on top of his/her head and extending the other towards the member holding the floor. A member offering a PoI may draw attention to the offer by saying “on that point Sir/Madam,” or “Point of Information”.
iv. Responding to PoI: A member holding the floor must respond to an opposing member, or members offering PoIs, in one of the following ways
(a) A clear gesture or hand signal rejecting the offer
(b) A verbal rejection of the offer, or
(c) A verbal acceptance of the offer.
v. A PoI should be phrased as a question, a comment or clarification and not ideally be longer than 15 seconds.
vi. Points of Information are marked for their strategic use under Method, and for their content under Matter.
5. Definition of Motion:
i. The definition is the interpretation of the motion as put forward by the Prime Minister in his opening remarks.
ii. The onus for establishing how the definition ties in with the given motion lies completely upon the Prime Minister. All subsequent speakers have a purely clarificatory role (if any) in this regard. The definition should be reasonable.
iii. The definition should state the issue or issues arising out of the motion to be debated, state the meanings of any terms in the motion requiring clarification and display clear and logical links to the wording and spirit of the motion.
iv. The Opposition, is allowed to challenge the definition, only as long as it believes that the Government has completely misconstrued the motion
6. A Point of Personal Privilege may be raised if a speaker feels he/she has been deeply insulted by another leader.
7. Role of Speakers:
i. Prime Minister: The prime minister introduces the topic, and defines the term related to it. He/she must give logical points.
ii. Leader of Opposition (LO): The LO has to tell whether they accept or reject the motion, and also give an outline of his arguments.
iii. Deputy Prime Minister gives the constructive arguments
iv. Deputy Leader of Opposition puts forward his points and rebuts the Government.
v. Government Whip: Give a summary of everything discussed by their team and rebut all arguments of the opposition
vi. Opposition Whip: Give a summary of everything discussed by their team and rebut all arguments of the opposition
8. Rules are subject to change. The decision of the adjudicators will be final.

The speaker has to get into the shoes of a famous personality and comment on current affairs with utmost conviction.
1. One speaker from each hostel.
2. Each team will have a different personality and a different topic which would be allotted 3 days prior to the event.

14) The Conquest
(5.30-7pm, D-116)
1. Each hostel should send 2 teams (3 members per team)
2. The event has 2 rounds.
3. 1st round will be an elimination round
- Hangman (vocabulary)
-1 team per hostel shall qualify for the 2nd round
-The eliminated team will act as the supporting team for the next round
4. 2nd round (On-stage) has 3- 4 visual games
- If a team is unable to answer, the question will be passed to the respective supporting team.
15) JAM
(5.30-7.15pm, Audi)
Rules:
1. The jam master is god and is eternally correct. Argument with his decision will earn negative points.
2. Every round of jamming will consist of 6 speakers who are expected to speak flawlessly anything related to the topic.
3. The topic needs to be mentioned in every sentence.
4. The content of the speech is irrelevant, that is, it will not be considered for judgement.
5. A speaker earns 1 point for every second he speaks, 5 points extra for every consecutive 15 seconds, 10 points extra if he speaks for a full one minute, and 5 extra points if he completes the minute.
6. For every error in the speech, the other participants are expected to bang the desk and point out the correct error only if the moderator indicates them to.
7. For every wrong error pointed out, 5 marks will be deducted from the participant.
8. If the participant is wrong in his speech yet the other participants don’t point out the fault, the moderator on his discretion may deduct 5 marks for every two errors from the speaker.
9. No slangs, colloquial language, poetry, songs, jingles, rhymes are allowed in the speech.
10. Also no reference should be made to any kind of literary work as a quotation or otherwise. You cannot use text from literature and replace words to fit your use. If pointed out this will be an error.
11. Alphabetical order sequence or the numerical sequence cannot be used to prolong your speech and reference to more than 2 proper nouns consecutively is also not allowed. And such similar instances that may occur during the course of the event will be decided upon then and there and the decision on the spot will stand final.
12. No participant is allowed to use a prepared structure in every round, that is, the content of the speech should not be the same in every round, not even two sentences be the same.
13. It is the moderator’s decision totally to judge whether a structure is behind used or not.
14. In any discrepancy with any rule, the moderator’s decision stands final.
15. The errors may be of the form: stammer, slur, pause, grammatical error, repetition of ideas, pronunciation error, non-repetition of the topic in every sentence, use of a structure, use of pre-prescribed formats of expression like poetry, song, etc.

- Three Rounds (celebrities & companies & miscellaneous)
- One person will be given the name of the celebrity/company/miscellaneous which the team has to guess, while the other two members have to guess by asking exactly 20 questions within 3 minutes which the former can answer only in YES , NO or MAYBE. The answer will be communicated to the event conductor , who will announce it to his team.
- No signs or gestures allowed .

- The Debate will follow the “3-on-3” Asian parliamentary style of debating with 8 speeches. In each round, there’ll be two teams competing against each other, with 3 members on each side.
- The first round will be a knock-out round. The draw for this round will be randomly assigned. This will be followed by a final round.

- A Silent movie (10-15 mins) will be shown and contestants have to write something according to their own perception about the clip.
- This is an open entry event comprising of single member teams for both Hindi and English from each of the four teams(hostels).

- Strictly English Language only
- Single member team
- Maximum 3 entries per team
- 3- 4 minutes speaking time per speaker.
- 4 minutes preparation time will be given after disclosing the topic.
- Songs and famous poems as well as rhymes should not be incorporated in the extempore at any point of time.
- The speaker should strictly adhere to the topic given, no matter how vague it maybe.

- Video Format : Discretion is allowed but at the time of the event the team should coordinate with the admin team for smooth running of the movie
- Subtitles : Allowed
- Animation : Compulsory, should be minimum 30 seconds and max 1 minute. Can be random as well but within the reach of the theme chosen
- Movie stills : Not Allowed
- Plagiarism : Stories, Plots will be scrutinized by the judges.
- Submission : CD/DVD in supported formats to be submitted by 20th April evening.
- Language- No bar.
- Background Music: Permitted.
- Lead Actors, Crew should be from Thapar university and belonging to the hostel submitting the movie.
- Location: Primarily – Thapar Campus, Patiala City is also allowed.
- Any team found taking professional/outside assistance will be disqualified.
17) English Play
(8.15-11pm, Audi)
- Members can be from 1- 15 in a team (including narrator and participants for stage handling, AV, lights etc.).
- Performance Time limit : 20-25 minutes
- Set-Up Time Limit: 10 minutes which includes setting up and clearing the stage. Teams will be penalized for exceeding this limit.
- Props are allowed . Props should not fall off the stage.
- No other language than English can be used.
- Teams should let the administration team regarding the requirement of mikes and lights 2 days in advance. Failing to do so can even lead to disqualification.
- Open theme. No cap on original or adapted.

Poetry submission event. This is an open participation event.

- Some words will be provided. choose any three
- Using that picture and words chosen, create a poem
- Pictures and words will be given on 13th April evening.
- Entries are to be submitted on 17th April to thaparavantgarde@gmail.com
- This is open for English, Hindi and Punjabi.
- For entries in Hindi and Punjabi if there occurs a problem in sending soft copies then the hostel representatives should give the hand written entries to either Rahul or Harsh on the very same day.
